Studies show the average employee participates in 62 meetings per month. Some experts estimate half of all meeting time is ineffective of unproductive. Effective facilitation can move a group forward to reach its goal. As facilitators of collaborative efforts, we are often concerned about the development and functioning of these groups. Through small group activities and group discussion, participants will learn the five stages of group development, and facilitation strategies to keep your meetings focused and on task. Another critical facilitation skill is helping groups make high-quality decisions. Six distinct decision-making methods and the pros and cons of each method will be explored during the session. After this session, participants will be able to: 1) Explain their facilitation style and facilitator tasks; 2) Recognize the stages of group development; and 3) Identify six decision making options. This highly interactive session will benefit anyone to understand group development and facilitation strategies for more effective meetings.
